AEW - Super Ranas!

Pops & Botches: AEW Dynamite – 10.16.21

IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT. YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!

Heya folks!

It’s been awhile! Normally, we have Dynamites on Wednesdays but I turned my TV on the other night and wrestling was nowhere to be found! As it would turn out, we were moved to Saturday this week and it won’t be the last time in the short future. Foreshadowing! Remember last week when Hangman Adam Page climbed that ladder of success only to find a giant poker chip and not the brass ring? Well, now he has a shot at Kenny Omega’s AEW World Heavyweight Championship. Man, I hope that match is good. I know they aren’t too familiar with each other yet. All I know is it’s going to be rad. Wait, whatever happened to Rad Radford?

I don’t know if it’s possible but if I’m AEW, I start every show/pay per view/event with CM Punk. There’s something about Cult of Personality that makes the crowd get instantly hype and absolutely lose their minds. This dude is just coming out to be on commentary and it’s like the crowd just saw Jesus. Phenomenal. Not you, AJ.

POP: Malakai 3:16-17

I’m so giddy at the fact that I get to see Lio Rush back on my TV. The Challenge veteran is such a great performer whether it be in the ring or as a mouthpiece. But seriously, let’s not pigeonhole him only as a mouthpiece. Let him get in the ring! I’m definitely intrigued by this partnership with Lio and Dante’ Martin though. Most notably, I’m interested in what will happen when Darius Martin returns.  Will he be upset about them working together or will he fall in line and acknowledge Lio Rush as the head of the table?

Malakai Black takes out Martin’s knee early, which is a talking point throughout this whole match. Unfortunately for Black, every time he gets any considerable momentum, Martin counters with speed and agility. The problem is that his injured knee is slowing him down. This comes into play during the finish when Dante’ misses a top rope maneuver and Malakai Black Masses him right in his face for the three count.

Dan Lambert has nuclear heat. He is just great at this whole professional wrestling thing. Turns out, he’s been wasting his time building an MMA empire.

POP: The Triple-A Lucha Frogs

Andrade El Idolo brings out Super Ranas (The Frogs for you non-bilingual folks) to fight Penta El Zero M and Rey Fenix for their AAA Tag Team Championships. Did anyone else notice over the last couple of weeks that they are going out of their way to pronounce Rey’s last name as Fennix instead of Phoenix? That’s not the biggest switch in this match, however. Right as the match begins, CM Punk (on commentary, remind you) calls bullshit on the frogmen and points out that it’s clearly FTR. After a few minutes of arguing amongst the commentary team, the Lucha Bros pull off the little hopper’s masks and sure enough, it’s these top guys:

After a match that ended quicker than I expected, FTR reaches the pinnacle (ahem) of AAA Tag Team wrestling and defeats the Lucha Bros by, and try not to be shocked, nefarious means. This means that a team that doesn’t have a single lucha bone in their bodies is somehow the AAA Tag Team Champions. As it turns out, MJF and Andrade had some sort of financial agreement to lend FTR to Andrade for one night only. All of it seems sketch so I’m not 100% sure that there’s not a rivalry brewing between Andrade and MJF. I’d be down for it.

BOTCH: Bro, What the Fuck Is This?

That’s the whole match. I have nothing to add. Wild Thing, my ass.

POP: Yes Waiter, I’ll have a Jack and Cole Please.

The Super Elite (Super Kliq? Super KliqElite? Super EliteKliq? Whatever they’re called) come out to take on the Dark Order. Clearly, a win here would bolster the recruiting chances of Dark Order. It makes me wonder where they’re sitting in the Rivals 24/7 Recruiting Rankings for the 2022 cycle. Adam Cole’s entrance is so much more popular than The Young Bucks. It’s quite the paradox between the two.

These teams have an incredibly fast-paced matchup. Hell, at one point, they even snuck in a Mick Foley spot for fans of the Attitude Era. Unfortunately, we all know who was winning this match. The Young Bucks and Adam Cole get the win after a BTE Trigger and knee to the back of Reynolds head. This brings out Jungle Boy, who instantly attacks Adam Cole but is dispatched to the outside real quick. They flee once Jungle Boy grabs a chair and nobody returns to help poor Brandon Cutler when Jungle Boy locks him in the Snare Trap. That’s one way to continue the beef with Jack and Adam. That’s for sure.

Speaking of beefs:

BOTCH: Focus, Commentary

I know this match was just to set up the post-match shenanigans with Ruby Soho but the commentary team spent most of the time literally talking about everything except the Kiera Hogan and Penelope Ford match. These girls were putting together a really decent match but commentary talked over it the enter time.

Penelope was able to hit a springboard cutter and finish Hogan off with the Muta Lock for the submission win. As I mentioned before, the main crux of this segment was Ruby Soho getting revenge on Penelope for last week’s beatdown. I was really hoping The Bunny would hop into the ring for her ass-whippin’ but I know it’s coming regardless. Ruby is pissed.

Cowboy Shit, y’all!

POP: American Dragonfish

Yes, Dragonfish are real. Don’t fuck with them. I know we briefly touched on it last week but man, Bobby Fish’s life is pretty sick, right? His AEW debut was for the TNT Championship and in his second match, he is main eventing Saturday Night Dynamite against The American Dragon Daniel Bryan. That is freakin’ awesome. He can clearly still go. It’ll be nice once they start putting him in stories and building his character/personality. I look forward to it.

I don’t think anyone is surprised to find out this match is fantastic. Both men give 100% and the announce team does a great job explaining some little nuances such as when Bobby Fish’s left blocked the referee and hampered him during a pinfall count. Also, this hurt my knees just watching, not gonna lie:

Has anyone cringed lately? You’re welcome. Despite that move giving 99% of dudes a concussion, it is NO MATCH for a dragon in America. When you think you have given the dragon a healthy dose of a traumatic brain injury, he wraps his damn body in yours and taps you out with a good ol’ fashioned heel hook.

I don’t know about you but I love seeing Daniel Bryanson win with his secondary moves. He doesn’t have to knee you in the face to get the victory every time. It’s almost like he’s the second coming of the man of 1,000 holds. Cuz this fool can win in a myriad of ways and I don’t think you’re ready for it.

POP: TOURNAMENT TIME!

Image

Oh boy! Look at that fuckin’ bracket! Dustin Rhodes vs. Bryan Danielson?!!? A Murderhawk Monster against A Mad King? The right side is STRONG. The left side – intriguing but not as exciting. I mean, Mox should run right through 10 without sweating. We obviously know how I feel about a Jon Moxley squash match. Powerhouse Hobbs may actually squeeze the life freshly out of Orange Cassidy. But we could also see Bryan Danielson against Eddie Kingston and even worse, we could get Mox vs. Kingston! No! Tony, what are you doing to my heart, bro?!? Don’t make me choose sides in a fight between the Real Best Friends!

Well all, that’s all we got this week. It was a good show but not my favorite. It definitely got a little lean at a couple points as seen above in the Botch portions. Come on guys, act like you’ve been here before. I can’t mansplain everything at you! Haha. Thanks for reading and don’t forget to reach out at the info below. I hope you tune in next Saturday (again!) for another raucous Dynamite! And don’t forget to tune in on Friday for Rampage. That’s where the Eliminator Tourney starts! Oh and in case you missed it…
