The Underground Recount: Boyle Heights Street Fight – S01.E05

What’s up, smarks? Another day, another episode of Lucha Underground here on the Underground Recount. Last week, Drago managed to best his to-be hunter, King Cuerno, and Johnny Mundo took down Big Ryck – though had no time to celebrate as he was beaten down. Buckle up for some more lucha action this week.

Boyle What Now?

Konnan’s in Dario’s office, which seems to be his favourite place. Puma wants revenge since he got beat down backstage by Cisco and Cortez. The two settle on Dario booking Puma vs Ryck in a Boyle Heights style match – a street fight, hence the title of this episode.

Run of the Mil

On to our first match, here comes Mil Muertes once again, of course with Catrina by his side. He’s here to face Drago – last week he escaped the grasp of King Cuerno, but can that luck carry over to help him survive Mil Muertes?

Speaking of Cuerno, he’s watching on, on top of an elevated platform. He’s scouting Drago since he lost to him – and may be even scouting Mil? Knowledge is power, after all. Mil definitely has the psychological advantage here because despite getting the win, Drago knows he still isn’t safe from Cuerno. Y’know, whether it be this episode or another in the future, I’m expecting a dive off that platform.

Both these men have amazing moves, like a corkscrew DDT. That move wasn’t enough, though, as Mil puts Drago away with the flatline. Catrina does the lick, of course. Cuerno may have lost last week, but he’s looking on, having gained some knowledge on Drago.

He’s not just watching, though. He makes his way down to the ring to hit a move and slide out like a snake. It’s far from over between these two men. We get a video package on Johnny Mundo, but we know him, I don’t feel the need to summarise.

Dario is backstage, or something, meeting with Mil and Catrina. Catrina tells Dario that he can’t hide his dark side forever. That’s just a tease, though. Because now it’s time for

A Napoleonic Win

Son of Havoc comes out with Ivelisse. He’s here to fight Mascarita Sagrada. Son of Havoc is a heavy hitter, I personally don’t see Mascarita having much of an advantage unless he can get a lot of momentum.

Yet to my surprise, he sets the pace early, getting some impressive offence. He nearly even gets a rollup. Havoc hits a standing moonsault – anytime someone hits an athletic move like that standing, I gots mad respect.

A woman is standing at the top of the stairs, looking on. She quickly retreats, however. Sagrada gets revenge on Ivelisse interfering with the match with a dive to the outside. Another believable dive spot with Havoc being distracted, too.

Mascarita actually gets a damn rollup on Havoc after a round the world tilt a whirl headscissors, winning the match. The size difference isn’t too bad between the two and he did have that momentum I mentioned, so it wasn’t so unbelievable that it was corny, it was a good surprise win.

Ooh, Chavo

Chavo vs Sexy Star, one on one! Last time we saw these two, Chavo brutalized Blue Demon, and in turn his tag partner Sexy Star. Sexy didn’t take too nice to that for quite obvious reasons, and now they’re squaring off.

Chavo has a twisted smile on his face – Sexy Star starts with the offence with some chops to the chest. Despite her attempt to start with the lead, Chavo proves too powerful for her, keeping her down.

Chavo tries to kiss Sexy Star, but gets slapped by her. A huricanrana throws Chavo right to the outside. Sexy goes for a chair. Even if it’s just, the referee must reprimand her – and to that, she kicks him right in the groin. Just like that, the match is over – but PENTAGON comes to Chavo’s aid for some reason. The two corner Sexy Star. Out comes Fenix, and they say blood is thicker than water, but he comes to the assist of Sexy Star (I don’t remember if the Lucha Bros have been established as brothers yet, but if they haven’t, well… Hindsight is 50/50), and they manage to get the better of Chavo and his new friend. Looks like a tag match is coming soon.

Street Fighter Turbo Alpha Lucha Edition

Here comes the main event. Boyle Heights street fight – Prince Puma vs Big Ryck. Ryck goes right for a choke on Puma, but he gets out of it, fighting with a barrage of strikes. As hearty as he is, it’s not enough to keep Ryck from throwing him, then moving him down to the bottom rope with his knee on top.

He whips Puma, having the obvious power advantage in this match. Ryck goes for a move in the corner, but Puma outmanoeuvres him. Another advantage becomes apparent as if it hadn’t already, Cortez and Cisco come in – but despite the number game, Puma is better than those two men, hitting a springboard armdrag and a huricanrana respectively. Puma heads to the corner for a move, but Ryck catches him – again, though, despite the power advantage of Ryck, Puma has the speed, hitting a tiltawhirl DDT. He kips right up, hitting a corkscrew dive to the outside, hitting all 3 men.

Cisco distracts Puma, allowing Ryck to land a big ol’ lariat on him, followed by two elbow drops. Big back elbow to Puma, Ryck has the lead again. He steps on Puma for a cover, but Puma moves out of the way before it’s even an issue. However, Ryck still brings the pain directly to him, trapping him in the corner again.

Cisco throws a trash can to the ring for his boss, who sets it up between the ropes, which Puma hits back first. Also, Striker and Vampiro shout out Tommy Dreamer. Nice. Not so nice is Puma hitting the trash can again as Ryck sets a chair up in the ring. Ryck sits down as his two cronies get in and take the reins on bringing pain to Puma.

Again, though, Puma outclasses the two men athletically, and delivers a dropkick to Ryck as he sits. Cortez swings with a kendo stick, but Puma gets the stick, hitting Cortez with a modified enziguiri and Cisco with a modified lung blower. Next is Ryck, who gets struck right on the back, but he stands proud.

The stick is not enough of an equalizer on Big Ryck, who uses it to bring Puma right in for a clothesline. The goons scoot a ladder into the ring, which is a successful target hit with the body of Puma. More stuff carted into the ring – another stick, a table.

The goons set Puma up on the ladder – Ryck ready to strike with the stick. But out of nowhere, just like Spider-Man (something me and Vampiro are on the same page on), Johnny Mundo drops down to the ring for the assist.

Johnny hits the goons with the ladder. Ryck goes for a hit with the stick, but Mundo delivers a spear. Look, I love Johnny Whatever Last Name He Has This Week, but as much as people say Edge’s spear is a running hug, it’s not exactly the best executed move Mundo has in his arsenal.

Despite that, Johnny gets a chair, but accidentally hits Puma as Ryck slides out of the way. The goons get the better of Mundo. They then set up a table, and you best believe Puma is thrown through it for the three count. A dour note for this episode to end on, but this has been another episode of Lucha Underground, and thus the Underground Recount. Join us next time to see just how these two reconcile.
