GCW Homecoming Part 1 Recap & Results – 7.25.2020

Do you like Independent Wrestling? Of course you do, you’re here aren’t you? Good, so welcome to the first ever GCW coverage on Steel Ring Post! GCW presents: Homecoming Part 1.

If you’re not familiar with GCW aka Game Changer Wrestling, know that it is one of the best Indie promotions in the US, possibly the world. Homecoming Part 1, is the second GCW show since the world got turned upside down due to the virus that shall not be named.

No, not Don Callis.

GCW ran their first show back in July, Backyard Wrestling 2. Since it wasn’t canon, this seemed like the best place to start. for GCW coverage. From the picturesque Garden Pier on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, GCW gave us several main event caliber matches and set up, or reset, a few storylines for Part 2 which air today on Fite TV.

So, let’s jump right in, shall we?

SIX PERSON SCRAMBLE MATCH: FEATURING LEE MORIARTY, MATTHEW JUSTICE, JIMMY LLOYD, ALLIE KAT, CALVIN TANKMAN, AND BENJAMIN CARTER

When the show starts, all six competitors are already in the ring. Most notable is Matthew Justice sporting some gnarly wounds from the previous night’s Paradigm Pro Wrestling Heavy Hitters 2 show, where he battled Stephan Bonner in a Street Fight. Yes, that Stephan Bonner.

This match was quick, as it couldn’t have been more than 10 minutes but, it did its job of getting the show off to a hot start. Everyone got a moment to shine but, the stars of the match were Calvin Tankman and Benjamin Carter.

Carter was the flippy shit guy, a compliment. Tankman is exactly what the name says, a Tank, man. Calvin Tankman won the match with powerbomb followed by a Michinoku Driver. Carter and Tankman had some great chemistry and I would love to see a full singles match between them. Who knows,it may exist. There’s a ton of wrestling out there.

TRE LAMAR VS ACH

The second match of the evening was truly a present versus future match up as, veteran ACH faced the up and coming Tre Lamar. This match was different from the opener as these two took their time to tell a bit of a story, in which ACH played the heel.

ACH worked over Lamar’s back and, despite a bit of a comeback by Lamar, ACH won with a beautiful Frog Splash. ACH is ACH, which means he was great. Tre Lamar is a wrestler to keep an eye on.

MANCE WARNER VS CHRIS DICKINSON

Light Beers and Lariats versus The Dirty Daddy! First Time Ever! If you’ve seen these two, you know what you’re getting. That’s not a knock against them, they know how to wrestle.

Warner fights like he came from WCW, a compliment, Dickinson like he’s been to Japan, he has. These guys had a very good match, and Dickinson won with a nasty looking Brainbuster.

BLAKE CHRISTIAN VS ALEX ZAYNE

See this match! Human GIF machines, All Heart Blake Christian and “The Sauce” Alex Zayne gave the people what they wanted.

These two have broken out recently, with Zayne getting some run in NJPW and ROH, and they did not disappoint. Christian says he looks to do something new every match, and he definitely did as I could not believe the things he was doing.

Christian won with what the announcers could only describe as an Omega Driver-esqe move. Seriously, see this match! These two are going to rule wrestling, sooner rather than later. Also, I’m happy Christian wore sunblock this time or, at least, stayed out of the sun.

DEATH MATCH: AJ GRAY VS ALEX COLON

BLOOD. That’s all I have to say. Colon came to the ring, light tube in hand, and broke it over his head, before the match even started.

These two went toe to toe, with light tubes, a pane of glass, a barbed wire covered door, a gusset, and a chair wrapped in light tubes. Both men bled heavily, and all I could think was about the Corona. Oh yeah, Alex Colon won when he did a Spanish Fly through a barbed wire covered pane of glass.

Yep. That happened. Depending on how you feel about death matches, will determine how you feel about this match. I “enjoyed” it but, it sure was bloody.

NATE WEBB VS EFFY

Dirt Bag Kitchen star “Spyder” Nate Webb vs Inspire Pro Pure Prestige Champion, our Daddy, Effy. This was a pretty quick match in which both guys did their thing.

Effy won with a Dragon Clutch, denying us a chance to hear dulcet tones of Wheatus one more time.

DEATH MATCH: SHLAK VS NICK GAGE

MDK, All Fuckin’ Day, also not for social distancing. BLOOD! Again, if death matches are your thing, you’ll love this match. SHLAK immediately busts a light tube to go after Gage. Gage counters with a pizza cutter. This time, the ring was adorn with light tubes and a large pane of glass for these two to play with.

Before we got too far into the match, Eddy Only, Eric Ryan, and Atticus Cogar show up. If you don’t know who those three are, count yourself lucky. They are 3/5ths of a dip shit faction known as 44.OH, which is led by GCW World Champion Rickey Shane Page. More on that dickhead later.

Anyway, we have SHLAK and Gage battle as they destroy each other with light tubes and a panes of glass. There is a light tube smash off, as Gage and SHLAK sit in chairs and just bust light tubes over each other’s heads.

The finish comes when 44.OH interferes costing Gage the match. Those guys suck. Gage gets on the mic afterwards and says he wants the GCW World Title back. More on that later.

DDT IRONMAN HEAVYMETALWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: JOEY JANELA VS YOSHIHIKO (C)

This is my main event. Yoshihiko is a legend and the “Bad Boy” came ready to fight. This match is for the prestigious, although somewhat tainted as some crappy people have held it, Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship.

These two worked each other over, and left nothing in the tank. Back and forth, Canadian Destroyer, Poison ‘Rana, a Figure Four, and a trip to Suplex City. This was everything.

Yoshihiko ascended a ladder and dove onto Janela, putting him through a door. Unfortunately, Yoshihiko could not finish Janela off. Janela ended up winning with an elbow drop off the top rope.

JOEY JANELA IS THE NEW DDT IRONMAN HEAVYMETALWEIGHT CHAMPION! Maybe we’ll see him defend it on AEW Dark or Dynamite? Heads up, Alison and M.A.

After the match, Janela talked of conquering Japan as the new champ. Before he could finish, he was attacked by Yoshihiko’s “assistant” who unmasked and revealed himself to be, LIO RUSH! Lio Rush is in GCW!

MAIN EVENT GCW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: HOMICIDE VS RICKEY SHANE PAGE (C)

RSP, Really Shitty Person, I mean Rickey Shane Page comes out with the 44.OH dweebs from earlier, for his title match with Homicide. As per the usual, 44.OH gets involved, doing their “best” Bullet Club impression.

This is RSP’s second defense in his 230 day reign, thanks corona. Doors and a fork were involved in this match. RSP used some of Nick Gage’s moves in the match as he taunted, not only his opponent but, the crowd. RSP retained thanks to 44.OH help and a short piledriver.

Post match, 44.OH attacked Homicide. SHLAK came out to help but, he was overwhelmed. Eventually, The King himself, Nick Gage came out and the cowards bailed. Gage told RSP to bring his crew because, Gage will bring his. He challenges 44.OH to a match, in which if any member of Gage’s crew pins a member of RSP’s team Gage gets a title shot. If any member of 44.OH pins Gage’s team, Gage will leave GCW.

That’s right, Title vs Career. RSP accepts and that will be the main event for GCW Homecoming Part 2.

GCW Homecoming Part 2 airs on Fite TV, July 26th, 2020. Check back here for results from that show.
